The Most Versatile Aussie Award is given each year at Nationals in memory of Joseph Hartnagle!

The Most Versatile Aussie award is offered to recognize the dog which best combines willingness to please, trainability and the desire to work livestock, as well as demonstrate a high level of skill in select performance events.  The winning MVA dog is also a true and honest representation of the breed when evaluated against the breed standard.

Entrant dogs must qualify in the NAMASCUSA Herding event and obtain a qualifying score in the Conformation Evaluation event.  Entrant dogs must also qualify in at least one, but not limited to one,  of the recognized performance events, specifically Agility, Rally, and Disc Dog.

Winner of the Goodwill Ambassador Award

Lego - submitted by Laura Lotz, official name of dog Willow Rocks Legolas Greenleaf CGC, owned by Laura Lotz

Lego has been an ambassador for her breed since she was a tiny puppy.  Her temperament has always been exceptional.  During the early days of socialization we would watch her walk right up to friends and strangers alike and sit and look up adoringly asking to be petted.

Wonderful experiences at puppy school and an exceptional trainer led us to Therapy Dog Prep School through Paws'itive Teams of San Diego.  Lego and I both learned and refined our skills to prepare us for her fulfilling job as a therapy dog.  Lego has always exceeded expectations and did not disappoint as she passed Prep School and her first Delta Society evaluation with flying colors at 16 months of age.

At the suggestion of friends at our church we decided to work at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla.  True to Lego's style she starts "working" the second she exits the car.  With a spring in her step and a huge smile on her sweet face she greets and charms everyone through the parking garage along the outdoor Anderson Clinic Plaza through the hospital lobby and into the volunteer office where she has everyone trained to give her a tummy rub while I am checking in.

As a therapy dog team we are allowed just about anywhere in the hospital except the surgical suites.  Doctors often write "orders" for therapy dog visits even in Intensive Care.  In the absence of "orders" we rotate floors that we visit each week.  No visit would be complete without Lego visiting all her favorite staff friends and going "shopping" in the gift shop.  They all tell me that Lego is their favorite therapy dog, but I'm sure they say that about all the wonderful therapy dogs that volunteer at that hospital.

There are visits that stand out in my memory, although nothing truly pivotal at least from my perspective.  Lego has a huge heart and simply has that extra sense that tells her when the patient or their family needs the extra time and attention.  We are told over and over how she has made someone's day because they miss their own pet or the soft head on their lap or the warm tongue of the little hand kiss or the sweet expression in her laughing eyes and smile that take their mind off of their pain or worries for even that brief time.  It is truly amazing how people just break into smiles when they see her trotting down the hallway or when she walks into a room.  The staff on many occasions has stopped meetings just to pet and play with Lego when she comes onto a floor.  More than anything Lego is consistent and she has in excess of 300 hours to date, even with taking maternity leave twice and the times she has been in "season" and could not come to the hospital.

Recently Lego used her special method of tender loving care right at home.  We will never know what happened, but one morning we woke up to find one of her almost 4 week old puppies limping terribly on his left rear leg.  The vet could not find anything except soft tissue trauma on initial examination.  Over the next couple of days he did not improve and his leg swelled even more.  At that visit the vet determined that he had a raging staph infection and required surgery to remove the infected tissue.  At 4 weeks and 1 day old the little boy underwent surgery.  His left flank was shaved and he came home with a drain in his leg and stitches.  He needed to be separated from his littermates so he could heal properly.

Lego was doing double duty then taking care of the other 5 puppies who were just starting to wean as well as caring for the injured pup.  The first few days after the surgery he was too sick and weak to eat and we were afraid that we were going to lose him.  Lego never left his side except to run down and feed the other babies.  She pushed him to nurse when he barely had the strength.  We would hear her feeding him off and on all night long as well as taking care of his other needs.  The light finally came back to his little eyes and Lego with her extra sense seemed to understand his continuing needs.  When he had the strength to pull himself up she would place herself or toys a little farther each day to encourage him to walk a little farther to strengthen his leg and certainly his spirit.  He has recovered and is now the big strapping male pup that he was destined to be.  He along with his brothers and sisters have exceptional temperaments and the heart to follow in Lego's paw prints and be therapy dogs someday.

Lego's willingness to please also extends to her obedience training, and successful forays into herding which she thoroughly enjoys.  Her other real love is agility and just like my favorite agility t-shirt says, "this team runs with one heart".

This Fall in addition to Lego's job at the hospital, Lego and I will begin another project with the Paws'itive Teams PAAT (Paws'itive Animal Assisted Therapy) Program.  After additional training, we will work one on one with a therapist in a facility for children with physical disabilities.

Lego has always been my constant and willing companion and does everything I ever ask of her and more.  She has the biggest heart in the world and is willing to give of herself for smiles and a tummy rub.  At the end of each busy day our favorite time is our time with her snuggled up next to me on the couch with her head on my lap.  I am so proud of my little mini Aussie girl with the big heart and gentle spirit - she is my dog of a lifetime and loves sharing herself doing her "big important job".
